What is alt rapper?

Alt rapper, or alternative rapper, is a genre of hip hop that emerged in the 1990s as a response to the mainstream commercialization of rap music. Alt rappers mix traditional rap elements with influences from indie rock, punk, and experimental music.

Alt rappers often have a more underground and independent sound and are known for their introspective and socially conscious lyrics. They also tend to have a more DIY approach to their music and prioritize authenticity over commercial success.

Some popular alt rappers include Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, the Creator, and J. Cole.
